چکیده

This research addresses the problem of achieving fault tolerant cooperation within smallto medium-sized teams of heterogeneous mobile robots. We describe a novel behaviorbased, fully distributed architecture, called ALLIANCE, that utilizes adaptive action selection to achieve fault tolerant cooperative control in robot missions involving loosely coupled, largely independent tasks. The robots in this architecture possess a variety of high-level functions that they can perform during a mission, and must at all times select an appropriate action based on the requirements of the mission, the activities of other robots, the current environmental conditions, and their own internal states. Since such cooperative teams often work in dynamic and unpredictable environments, the software architecture allows the team members to respond robustly and reliably to unexpected environmental changes and modifications in the robot team that may occur due to mechanical failure, the learning of new skills, or the addition or removal of robots from the team by human intervention. After presenting ALLIANCE, we describe in detail our experimental results of an implementation of this architecture on a team of physical mobile robots performing a cooperative box pushing demonstration. These experiments illustrate the ability of ALLIANCE to achieve adaptive, fault-tolerant cooperative control amidst dynamic changes in the capibilities of the

Adaptive Robotic Communication Using Coordination Costs

Designers of robotic groups are faced with the formidable task of creating effective coordination architectures that can deal with changing environment conditions and hardware failures. Communication between robots is one mechanism that can at times be helpful in such systems, but can also create a time and energy overhead that reduces performance. In dealing with this issue, various communicat...

ALLIANCE: an architecture for fault tolerant multirobot cooperation

ALLIANCE is a software architecture that facilitates the fault tolerant cooperative control of teams of het erogeneous mobile robots performing missions composed of loosely coupled subtasks that may have ordering dependencies ALLIANCE allows teams of robots each of which possesses a variety of high level functions that it can perform during a mission to individually select appropriate actions t...

A case study for life-long learning and adaptation in cooperative robot teams

While considerable progress has been made in recent years toward the development of multi-robot teams, much work remains to be done before these teams are used widely in real-world applications. Two particular needs toward this end are the development of mechanisms that enable robot teams to generate cooperative behaviors on their own, and the development of techniques that allow these teams to...

A Novel Robust Adaptive Trajectory Tracking in Robot Manipulators

In this paper, a novel adaptive sliding mode control for rigid robot manipulators is proposed. In the proposed system, since there may exist explicit unknown parameters and perturbations, a Lyapunov based approach is presented to increase system robustness, even in presence of arbitrarily large (but not infinite) discontinuous perturbations. To control and track the robot, a continuous controll...
